Introduction: A geographic information system (GIS) can help in locating facilities and medical centers, and in crisis management during accidents. One of the appropriate information sources for using this system is the medical records of victims of traffic accidents. Since these records have not been used in designing GIS until now, the aim of this study was the implementation of a GIS using data from the medical records of injured patients. Methods: In this applied study, the medical records of victims of traffic accidents hospitalized in Chamran Hospital in Ferdows, Iran, from June to November 2014 were reviewed. The GIS was used to identify hot spots of accidents (black spots), and the distribution of injuries and health services in these spots, in terms of urban and suburban accidents. Results: From the total of 470 road accidents, 216 had occurred in urban and 256 in suburban areas. In terms of distribution of injuries, in the urban areas, abdominal injury in Islamiyeh, Iran, and in suburban areas, head and hand injuries in Sarayan, Iran, were the most prevalent. In urban accidents, most injured patients (46.75%) were referred to the emergency ward, and in suburban accidents, most patients (53.93%) were referred to the general surgery ward. The longest time for arriving at the hospital from urban areas was 5 hours for face injuries and 2.8 hours from suburban areas for foot injuries and those with multiple injuries. Conclusion: The medical records of victims of traffic accidents showed that at least 5 other emergency stations are needed. It seems that by establishing more stations the duration of moving injured patients to a hospital could be shortened. Since the distribution of injury type on the roads was determined in the present study, the emergency stations could be equipped with the required personnel and facilities based on injury types.

Introduction: The pharmacy information system (PIS) is a subsystem of the hospital information system (HIS). In this study, the PIS implemented in hospitals affiliated with three medical universities in Tehran (Iran) were evaluated. Methods: This applied study was conducted using descriptive method in 2015. The study sample included five PISs in hospitals affiliated with three medical universities in Tehran which were selected and evaluated according to the system suppliers. The data were collected through observation and using a checklist (addressing both general and specific criteria). The content validity of the checklist was approved by 6 experts in the field. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics. Results: With respect to the general features of the systems, only two systems were capable of restricting repeated attempts made for unauthorized access to the system. The evaluation of the specific criteria of the systems showed that no attention was paid to patient safety aspects. Furthermore, it was revealed that there was no connection between these systems and information systems of pharmaceutical companies. Conclusion: Financial aspects were the main consideration when designing and producing PISs and little attention was paid to therapeutic criteria such as patient safety. Efficient and effective use of PISs requires the consideration of both general and specific aspects in the development of such systems.

Introduction: Accessing credible information is essential in the area of healthcare. Information therapy is a method that helps patients to access credible and relevant information regarding their conditions. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of distant information therapy on glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) levels of patients with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Methods: The current applied and semi-empirical study was conducted on 31 patients with type 2 diabetes and 35 patients with pre-diabetes referring to Isfahan Endocrine and Metabolism Research Center, Iran, during winter 2015. The subjects were chosen through simple random sampling. The subjects’ HbA1C was measured at the beginning of the study and after the information therapy intervention. The gathered data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics in SPSS software. Results: The results showed no meaningful difference in the HbA1C levels in the type 2 diabetic or pre-diabetic groups before and after the intervention. There was also no significant difference between mean HbA1C levels of the two groups after the intervention. Conclusion: The findings revealed that distant information therapy had no significant effects on HbA1C levels of patients in either group. As a result, in order to carry out information therapy, it may be better to use health software and social networks rather than posted information packages and SMS massages. It is also necessary to give patients with pre-diabetes a better understanding of their condition and the side effects of diabetes so that they follow instructions and guidelines to control their disease more seriously.

Introduction: An important aspect in the evaluation of scientific and research products is citation. Yet, a percentage of citations consist of self-citations, which, when employed excessively, although increases the impact factor (IF), leads to the demotion of journals. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between self-citation and impact factor in Iranian journals indexed in the journal citation reports (JCR) of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).Methods: This applied survey was conducted using document analysis method. Samples included 44 Iranian journals indexed in JCR of ISI by the end of 2014. The data were collected via filtrated output for Iran from the ISI database. Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation coefficient in SPSS software. Results: The 44 studied journals had 6004 citations (mean = 136.45). Moreover, 43.18% of the journals showed a rate of 21%-69% self-citation, to the extent that after removing the rate, their impact factor decreased significantly. Pearson correlation coefficient revealed a direct significant relation between self-citations and IF (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The self-citation rate of the studied journals is rising in ISI. There is a direct correlation between their self-citation rate and IF. Although self-citation is to some extent acceptable, its sharp increase will result in the devaluation and deterioration of the journal. It is suggested that in order to increase real citation of journals, the use of improper methods to increase IF are avoided, and instead, studies are shared on international scientific networks.

Introduction: In recent years, the number of academic medical research journals has increased in Iran. These journals must be based on the standards and criteria required in international indexing databases in order to be indexed. The aim of the present study was to determine the extent to which the medical journals in Iran comply with Medline indexing criteria. Methods: The current study was a descriptive-applied study. The statistical population consisted of all scientific research journals approved by the Ministry of Health of Iran. The data collection tool was a checklist, which was prepared on the basis of 12 structural criteria extracted from Medline database criteria. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods in SPSS software. Results: The lowest score was 4 and the highest score was 12 for the studied journals. The highest frequency of journals (24.6%) earned a score of 8. According to the structural criteria of Medline, average score of the journals was 8.86. In addition, the degree of compliance of the structural status of Iranian medical journals with the Medline criteria was calculated at 73.68%. Conclusion: In terms of the majority of the structural criteria of Medline, the studied Iranian medical journals were at a satisfactory level. However, regarding the international diversity of the editorial board, support of scientific societies, and the reporting of conflict of interest by the authors, the studied medical journals were not at a desirable level. Compliance of the journals with the standards can increase their chances of being indexed in Medline.

Introduction: Child well-being is, either directly or indirectly, affected by the health expenditures of the household. This study aims to investigate the health poverty trends in the field of health within households with children in rural and urban areas of Kerman Province, Iran, between the years 1984 and 2012. Methods: In this trend analysis, using the statistical data on health poverty indices of households during 1984-2012, the households of Kerman were divided into four age groups. Moreover, their health poverty status was measured using the household financial contribution approach and rate and gap measures. For data analysis, STATA and Excel Software were used. Results: The health poverty rate showed large fluctuations in both urban and rural households with children. The highest rate of health poverty in urban and rural households was observed in the year 1989. A decline was observed in the rate and depth of health poverty during the first to third development plan in rural and urban areas. However, this trend showed an increase during the fourth development plan. Health poverty rate in the year 2012 (beginning of the fifth development program plan) increased in both rural and urban areas of the province, but poverty gap showed some fluctuations. Conclusion: The present study showed that, in total, the rate and severity of health poverty was higher in rural areas compared to urban areas. These research findings showed the lack of efficient and effective policies to reduce household experience of catastrophic health care expenditures, especially in rural areas.

Data mining, as a tool for extracting useful information from large data sets, has been one of the areas of interest to researchers in the field of health. Classification is a learning function by which data is mapped to one of the predefined categories. According to World Health Organization (WHO), heart disease, renal disease, diabetes and cancer have been the cause of 68% of all deaths in 2012. The aim of this research was to study various types of classification algorithms and the results of previous researches in this regard in the field of health. In this narrative review, studies on heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes, published from 2003 to 2015, were investigated. The keywords of “data mining”, “classification”, “health”, “heart disease”, “diabetes”, and “breast cancer” were searched in ScienceDirect, Elsevier, Springer, and IEEE databases. In addition, references and citations of each retrieved article were collected. After the elimination of unsuitable studies, 34 articles were selected. Literature review showed that frequency of use of neural network algorithm was the highest for all three diseases. Neural network and Naïve Bayes for heart disease, K-nearest neighbors for breast cancer, and neural network for diabetes had the highest accuracy. In general, it can be concluded that although no algorithm can be consider the best algorithm for each disease with certainty, determining the best algorithm for each disease could be useful for future studies.
