Abstract

Introduction: Information literacy is increasingly important in the era of rapid technological change and explosion of information. Librarians can guide users through the vast array of information available in today's libraries. The continuing demand for accurate and computer delivered information has increased the need for librarians with information literacy skills. Methods and Materials: It is a descriptive study in which 39 librarians took part. The data were collected by a questionnaire which assessed the following points : The librarians, awareness of the society's information needs, knowledge of information sources, search and retrieval techniques and their attitude towards factors affecting information literacy . Results : Librarians have optimal knowledge of the society's information needs and search and retrieval techniques. While their knowledge of information sources was at average level, they were not familiar with different ways to access the required information. Conclusion: Librarians referred to the following factors as those affecting information literacy training: environmental factors and their managers' views. Incorporating information literacy in all services requires the collaborative efforts of faculty, librarians and administrators.
