Assessment of Nutritional Literacy among Patients with Abdominal Obesity in Bushehr

Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of nutritional health literacy among people with abdominal obesity who were referred to nutrition clinics.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 317 patients with abdominal obesity who had visited nutrition clinics in Bushehr in 2012. The data were collected using a stratified sampling method proportional to the volume. The Nutritional Health Literacy Questionnaire (EINLA) was employed for data collection. The data were analyzed using the statistical software package SPSS version 24, with the use of the independent t-test, chi-square test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation.

Findings: The mean score for the total nutritional literacy level was 17.94 ± 2.29. The participants in the study were divided into two groups based on their nutritional status: adequate and insufficient. It was found that 87.1% of individuals with abdominal obesity had adequate nutrition, while only 12.9% demonstrated insufficient nutrition.

Conclusion: The majority of individuals with abdominal obesity in Bushehr demonstrated adequate nutritional health literacy. However, in the three skill sections of determining food units, calculations, and reading labels, it is essential to consider these factors when developing a plan.

Key message: The principal message is as follows: In light of the pervasive prevalence of abdominal obesity and the attendant negative consequences and diseases, it is imperative that individuals endeavor to enhance their awareness and obtain accurate and pertinent information.
