Introduction: Following unpleasant health Doom Scrolling is the habit of obsessively browsing negative health news and information. The aim of the present study is to identify the consequences of health Doom Scrolling and strategies to cope with this behavior.
Methods: The study was conducted as a scoping review following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. Data were collected through a systematic search of international and national databases using keywords related to Doom Scrolling. Out of 1185 retrieved records, 61 studies met the inclusion criteria and were entered into the final analysis.
Results: Findings indicated that Consequences of Doom Scrolling can be divided into four general categories: physical (such as sleep problems and fatigue), psychological (such as increased anxiety, stress, and depression), social (such as decreased quality of life and reduced interactions), and information-technology (such as cyberspace addiction, privacy violations). Strategies for dealing with Doom Scrolling were also identified in six general categories: self-management, public education, children's education, policymaking, social support, and content monitoring.
Conclusion: The evidence suggests that Doom Scrolling is a multidimensional phenomenon with widespread effects on different levels of individual and social health. Countering this phenomenon requires a multilevel and comprehensive approach that requires interventions in the individual, social, educational, organizational, regulatory, and media dimensions, such that reducing the negative consequences of this phenomenon requires combining individual empowerment and self-management with educational, structural, institutional, and regulatory measures in the health system and media space.
